MCM 4-2-09 Update

Company Stock Positions

After a rejection of both GM and Chrysler’s restructuring plans, this week the Federal Government challenged both companies to quickly revise their plans, even if it includes some form of bankruptcy reorganization.

Events may happen very quickly in the coming weeks. Holders of GM stock should be especially careful, given the potential consequence of a bankruptcy. If a company enters bankruptcy reorganization, the common stock of the company can be significantly devalued or even expire worthless.

We have addressed the risks of holding company stock in our educational seminars, client communications, and in personal client conversations. Although we have liquidated most all company stock positions in client accounts long ago, some clients have asked us to maintain a position in company stock. If you have asked us to hold company stock in your account, please contact us to discuss the potential risks and strategies for its disposition (even if we have spoken about it recently).

We obviously hope for the best for these companies going forward, and hope bankruptcy will be avoided in both cases. However, as your investment advisor we have a fiduciary duty to make you aware of the potential investment risks.

As always, if you have any questions about your portfolio, our investment strategy, the financial markets, your retirement plan, or anything related to your personal finances, contact us toll-free at 1-866-444-6246. Also, if you would like to review your long-term objectives or personal sensitivity to market volatility as it relates to your portfolio’s asset allocation, do not hesitate to give us a call. We always look forward to talking with you.

Sincerely,

P.S. We continue to get a great deal of questions concerning pension safety, especially as it relates to a company in financial distress. The March issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance contained a very good article on this subject, “Is Your Pension Still Safe?”. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions relative to your personal situation.
